Rheology of growing axons

چکیده
The growth of axons is a key process in neural system development, which relies upon subtle balance between external mechanical forces and remodeling cellular constituents. A problem the biophysics therefore to understand overall response axon under stretch, often modeled phenomenologically using morphoelastic or viscoelastic models. Here, we develop microscopic mixture model based on protein turnover damage obtain macroscopic rheology axonal shafts. First, provide an estimate for instantaneous elastic axons. Second, predict that moderate traction velocities, core behaves like Maxwell material whose rheological parameters can be expressed terms properties. Third, larger show failure takes place due extensive damage.

Microtubule-associated protein 1 b (MAP1 b) is expressed at especially high levels in neurons actively extending axons, and although it appears to be required for axon growth, the nature of its role is unknown. We reasoned that a detailed description of the localization of MAP1 b in growing axons would help define how MAP1 b participates in axon growth. Therefore, we have stained cultured sympa...

We know an enormous amount about the chemistry of a living cell, but next to nothing about its physics — the interplay of forces between organelles and molecules that governs the cell’s detailed behaviour. Think of the plasma membrane, for example: an oily sea of phospholipid molecules studded with protein ‘icebergs’ of different shapes and sizes, some floating free and others anchored at their...

We have shown previously that axonal microtubules (MTs) are composite, consisting of two distinct domains that differ in their content of tyrosinated alpha-tubulin (tyr-tub). One domain is poor in tyr-tub and is situated at the minus end of the MT. The other domain is rich in tyr-tub and extends from the plus end of the tyr-tub-poor domain to the end of the MT. We have proposed that the spatial...

We examined cytoskeleton-associated forms of NF proteins during axonal neuritogenesis in cultured dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and NB2a/d1 neuroblastoma. In addition to filamentous immunoreactivity, we observed punctate NF immunoreactivity throughout perikarya and neurites. Immuno-electron microscopy revealed this punctate immunoreactivity to consist of non-membrane-bound 75 nm round/ovoi...
متن کاملActivity-dependent development of calcium regulation in growing motor axons.
In cultured nerve cord explants from the crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), the normal impulse activity levels of growing motor axons determine their response to Ca2+ influx. During depolarization or Ca2+ ionophore application, normally active tonic motor axons continue to grow, whereas inactive phasic motor axons retract and often degenerate. To determine the role of Ca2+ regulation in this diffe...
